Confused!

Just basically i really dont know what i want, and if that is good value, Also is there a big jump in performance between the GTX 480 and the 5970?

When you say photo editing, what do you mean?
Everyone one states 'a little photo editing' in their threads now.
What is it you mean? Firing up pohotoshop to create the odd work of genious, or removing red eye for the occasional picture in MS Paint, or use IE8 to browse for some top shelf materials and right clicking 'save as'?

Gamingwise 5970 will kick a 480 out of bed.
What type of games do you play, at what resolution?

I will be firing up photoshop from time to time

Hopefully at a higher res than my last Monitor could handle, which was 1680x1050, so 1980x1080, Mainly shooters, but will be getting into Eve more i think, Just a mix of games

5870 crossfire is usually more or less on par with a 5970, at 1920x1080 on a single monitor you would be fine with a single 5850 or a 5870, depends on how much money you want to spend

Yeah i had a look at them, Is there much difference between 5870 crossfire and a single GTX 480? :)

Yes there is a big difference, but of course along with crossfire brings all the other dual card related issues up. ATi drivers are fine with a single card but just recently a lot of people have been having issues with crossfire machines. You've only got to do a bit of research in the graphic card forum to find this out.

If you just want ease of use without too many problems it's probably advisable to go with a fast single card, however if you think your technically savvy enough to cope with the odd issue then by all means try out a couple of 5870s or Nvidia 470s in SLi. For the most part I think it's safe to say you'll get less issues with two Nvidia cards as the drivers are easier to navigate as well as better integration in terms of game profiles, 3D, PhysX etc etc.

I guess the obvious question to ask before recommending a video card(s) is - What resolution do you intend to play your games at?

Thing is with the single 480 there is the possiblity of upgrade to sli in the future which would then out pace the 5870 CF

I'd also probably go for a single GTX 480. If you ever feel the need, you can always add a second one in a year or so, when they become less expensive.

Indeed, however you can get a 5870 for nearly £100 cheaper than a 480, not to mention the bigger more expensive psu you'd need to run 2x480s!

For 1920x1080 which incidentally is the res I game at, I think you'd be more than happy with the performance of a high end single card, either the 480 or 5870 will give you enough horsepower to max out the majority of games that are out at the moment.

I can personally vouch for the 480 as I have one myself, it runs everything really well and I can even run the majority of my games in 3D using Nvidias 3D vision without having to turn too many details down in the latest games.

To the OP, what pc are you running at the moment?

My last build had 2 8800GT's in SLI

Think im going to go for this now!

As it only comes in about £50 dearer than what i was going to get

Very nice, I don't think you'll be disappointed with that :D

I have the same monitor and obviously with the Nvidia card specced you'll be able to purchase the 3D vision kit at a later date for some mind blowing visuals!

Yeah that was the plan! Monitor good then? Seen quite mixed reviews! The 3D was what had to be cut out for the time being :(
