As the title says " Confusing information on Lag or Ghosting in games".

I am trying to get my head round things like "input lag", "ghosting" and all the other words that people use to describe high response times when viewing their monitors, or when purchasing monitors primarily for games.

I have reached the point where I am undecided which of the following two 24" monitors I will purchase to replace my Samsung SyncMaster 215TW.

BenQ FP241W
Dell 2408W

My requirements are as follows;

a) 8 hours a day playing IL2 Forgotten Battles online..see here http://www.warbirdsofprey.org/
b) Photo editing and importing slides, so I use colourvision monitor calibration software to set up the monitor see here http://www.datacolor.eu/en/products/monitor-calibration/spyder2express/index.html
c) Web browsing email etc etc.

Primarily I will be playing IL2 Forgotten Battles online, but I need to get the colours as faithful as possible for photographic work with the least amount of lag or ghosting in the game as possible.

Is there much difference between the two monitors? Is the panel technology similar, or has it moved on sufficiently for me to notice the difference compared to the samsung? With the samsung I have has a certain amount of lag in the game when moving my head around the cockpit using TrackIR 4 ( http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/02-products/product-TrackIR-4-PRO.html ) but that is to be expected as it is a TN panel. Would either of the above panels show lag in the game more than I currently experience with the samsung?

I have looked at just about every review of 24" monitors, and I had even looked at the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-026-OK but it has a glossy screen so that rules it out.

The cost is not too much of an issue, but I don't want to spend money unnecessarily.

I am currently using an EVGA 780i Motherboard with an E6600 (2.4Ghz) overclocked to 3.4Ghz and 2 x BFG 8800 GT OC2 (SLi), with 2GB Geil RAM, so I will not have a problem at the monitors native resolution in the IL2 game.

Has anyone seen the monitors side by side, or is it a case of they are very good panels, and I would be happy with either. Thoughts anyone?

Edited. Which panel technology is the best for games (less ghosting or lag)?

Edited again. Since posting the above, I have found this link...http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=718793

The OcUK VA panel monitor does not have a glossy screen.

I am an FPS gamer playing CoD2 mainly and I haven't noticed any difference in input lag or ghosting from moving from a 206BW with 2ms response time to the OcUK with 6ms.

Most people are receiving panels which are from monitors which cost in the £400 range, my panel is from the BenQ FP241W which is worth £420 and I paid £235.

I would definitely consider the OcUK 24".

I got the same panel as perox on my OcUK one, which is the same as in the BenQ FP241W. It's a glossy black casing not panel that the product title refers to.

Input lag refers to the time it takes your equipment to process the signal, usually because it goes a long path like from a wireless gamepad->PS3->Digital Amp->video upscaler->TV. Usually not noticeable but is most obvious when the sound is slightly out of sync on DVD's. I suspect the problem is with the trackir drivers or hardware rather than the monitor.

Ghosting is much less of a problem these days imho, perhaps I'm just used to it but I don't notice it on my TV or my monitors.

Thanks for the response.

Conflicting information here. I spoke to Tom on Friday and he said the current stock have glossy screens (made by DGM). Also somewhere on this forum, there is a picture of one clearly showing it has a glossy screen with it showing a reflection of the PC on the right hand side of it. Reading this link http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17806175 it appears to be pot luck to which panel you get. If you rma a glossy one, who is to say you won't get another glossy one. I dont want to spend time and money sending them back and hoping to get a non glossy one on the next "lucky dip". Good luck to guys who received the ones they wanted.

Thanks again.

I feel sure it is not the trackir drivers. It operates instantaneously at 120 frames per second, see here http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/02-products/product-TrackIR-4-PRO.html It is when I move my head very quickly to look behind me that I notice it, so it is most likely to be ghosting.

you can see input lag on youtube, you see 2 monitors run together the same game and one is slightly behind the other.

so for online gaming this is basically adding precious MS of delay to your ping, i have a samsung 226bw which is one of the lowest if not lowest response time monitors you can get atm, from what i remember it was around 4-8ms on a chart (ive seen as high as 20-40 on some dells). No noticable ghosting to me either on it

if you are going to be doing some serious photo editing, its going to be difficult to get the right monitor with low input lag time & response time, along with right colours.
