Connct 4 - winning strategies?

What's the best way to win? If it's your go first where is the best place to start (etc...) :confused:

I remember writing connect 4 for a programming exam at college. It had difficulty 3 levels : Easy, Easy and.. Easy! Basically, all the colours were the same. You couldn't loose!

If you can't beat that computer player then I'd give serious thought to playing another game. It's not a particularly taxing game, you just need to think a couple of moves ahead and ideally you will create a situation where the opponent has to go one way to block your potential winning line but in doing so has gifted you another line of four.

best place is the middle then one on top or by the side give you the best start off I find.

Only posted the flash version as an example. Was hoping someone may offer some actual playing tips.
