Hi,

Not sure if this belongs in here or the console forum, so if a mod thinks its best in another?

Basically I'm confused as to how I connect my incoming Xbox to the net given my set up at home. I have Virgin cable which comes in on a coax cable, goes into the modem, then plugs straight into my pc in the study.

How do I split the signal? Given the distances I'd need masses of ethernet cable to run from a router back to the Xbox which will be in another room. Is there any way of splitting the coax signal at the box at the wall?

I've tried twice to set up a wireless network with 2 separate routers but can never get it to work.

Whats the easiest and most secure way to do it, before I tear my hair out in frustration.

Thanks.

The best way by far is to use a router, and it should be easy enough as long as you follow some basic steps.

  1. Power the modem off at the wall and leave it off for a good 30 seconds.
  2. Plug the cable that was going into your PC (assuming it's an ethernet cable and you weren't using USB) into the WAN (internet) port on the router (assuming you're not trying to use a router with an integrated ADSL modem).
  3. Power on the modem, let the lights settle, then power on the router.
  4. Connect another ethernet cable between one of the LAN ports on the router and your PC.
You should now be able to point your browser at the router's web admin pages (read the manual) and configure the wireless network, security etc. What options you choose and any troubleshooting steps are going to depend on the make and model of router.
