Connect query - Speed

Probably a noob question but I would like some advice anyway.

I recently tried to upgrade to 8mb from 2mb after about two weeks of problems then said that my line was only able to support a 2mb connection with it being stable.

Now before on the icon on the bottom right hand corner for the connection speed(two computers). This used to show 2.2mb when connected.

When I upgraded this now comes up with 6mb(ish). Since this has been happening my line is not very stable and keeps dropping out randomly.

The helpdesk guy said that this was the connection speed of the computer to modem not the actual line speed. Is that right?

Because surely it would not show 6mb if i was on 2mb speed. The reason for the dropout I think is that the line is not stable for that speed. Personally I just think they havent down graded the line properly.

So is the guy taking rubbish or could there be another problem? One more question when changing the line speed can this be done when on the phone or is there a 3-4 day time change.

Thanks

I would imagine you are using a speedtouch 330 and its reporting your sync rate at the local exchange, also if you have recently (in the last 10 days) upgraded to upto 8mb your line may still be training to find the maximum stable rate. If you continue to get only 2mb after the 10 day period then it could indicate a stuck profile in which case you would need to contact your isp.

I have contacted them and they said what I said earlier in the first post. They think its a line fault and said BT should investigate.

What can I tell them to do? (As they arent too good with the support)

As i said before its what your line synchronises at to your local exchange not the actual line speed. For example mine syncs at 8128 down and 448 up but i get a variable rate between 5 - 7mb depending on different times of the day. Its not the connection speed between the computer and router but a sync rate instead.
If you had a router you would be able to get better line stats showing line noise etc which might indicate whether the line is unstable. Another thing to try is remove your broadband modem and filter and see if there any noise on the telephone line by making a call from a normal analog phone as this may cause you connection to be intermittent and suffer from drop outs etc.
Change the adsl filter as well as try connecting through the engineers socket under the BT socket faceplate and keep on at your isp to resolve the problem with BT wholesale if that does'nt help
