Connect two RJ45 cables (without plugs)?

My dad has managed to pull the plug off a RJ45 cable! I know I can buy a coupler to connect two plugs, in the meantime is it possible to connect the two cables without the Plugs? I know it’s not a long-term solution but could I simply strip the wires tape up the matching colours and connect the other end (with the plug on) to the PC?

Yes you need to know if the cable is to act as a standard straight through ethernet or crossover (probably standard) and be very careful in checking the colour coding of the cables.

increaesd risk of data errors though as the join will be unshielded and worse than a proper connector

I've seen this done in a house, not the most elligant method, and you'll probably take a throughput hit.

Very simple to buy a crimper and some heads though

just tape them together making sure you connect the colours to the same colour, the ends make the wire a crossover/straight so just do that.

Try to keep the pairs twisted as best you can becaues even a few inches of parellel cables will introduce a lot of crosstalk. More than 1/2" untwisted is out of spec!
