Hi people,
I'm trying to get this linksys wag54g router to work on my friends pc and it's driving me mad!!
The thing is i don't think it's the router at fault, but something on her pc. here's the situation:
usual connection : tiscali 2mb usb modem- dials up no problem and internet explorer works.
go through the routine of setting up the router- no access at all, not even to the router.(checked lan cable etc- all ok)
Boot into safe mode and no problems at all- router is set up and will connect and internet explorer loads up.
Boot back into ordinary windows and nothing again. (router still on and connected)
if i go to tools/ check internet connection (in ie6 i think it is) it says that http, https and ftp are not available- check your firewall.
I've tried disabling the firewall, restoring defaults and even disabling the router firewall- it still wont work!
Sorry for the long post but if anyone can help it would be much appreciated- i have clumps of hair torn out of me scalp!
regards,
Steve.

Check the adapter settings on the network card and the power settings in her profile. It should be set to auto for address and DNS settings and make sure the network card is not able to be turned off to save power.
Lastly check her IE settings are set to never dial a connection. IT may be trying to use the USB modem still.

You need to goto internet options/connections/setup then

conn to net, conn manually, conn to conn that requires uname a pword.

What?! why would he want to do that? That will create a new connection, which is completely un-necessary with a router.

If you go that route you would want to select connection that is Always on/LAN not requires username and password.

hi ,
thanks for the quick replies,
yes, the settings are on auto (for ip address, dns etc) and i even tried making a new connection just to see! but, alas, no joy!
ive also deleted all her network connections (usb dial up) and still no luck :(
she says certain things like her kid's java games wont download aswell as it wont let her.
it's windows xp btw.
I've suggested a clean install of her system as it's so full of junk and is very slow.

So obvious I missed it... Ping 127.0.0.1 from command prompt. Should tell you if the TCP/IP stack is working ok. If it fails, use the tool Bledd suggests.

cheers chaps, your help is much appreciated.
i'll try the suggested software and if no joy will attempt a re- install.
(i bet any money she can't find her xp cd or repair cd!! lol)
it never stops!
regards,
Steve.

You can download an XP SP2 ISO easy enough. What you will want to do is run something like magical jellybean key finder to make sure you get the license key off. I wouldn't rely on the one on the sticker being the one it was installed with.
