Im using a vga to hdmi connector, set the display at 720p. Turn the monitor on then the ps3 and get screen message saying "input D sub" followed by "Auto Adjust" after that; nothing.

I have also held the power button on the ps3 for 5 seconds to see if it would calibrate.

My question is could it be the vga-hdmi adapter that is causing the issue as this is first time using or are there certain things i need to of done to get this thing working currently i have tested out a ps3 game and a blu Ray dvd to no avail.

Any help muchly appreciated

I bought an adapter before considering a monitor and this was all before buying a ps3. I have misplaced the hdmi cable which is a real pain. It may have possibly dropped down the back of the radiator and if it has the position of the window seal and wall make it next to impossible to get to it.

As the guys above have said - you really need a HDMI cable.

A HDMI to VGA adapter like this has to do digital to analogue conversion on the video signal - so you aren't going to get a particularly high quality, low latency image when using a device like this.

Considering both the video source (PS3) and monitor have native HDMI ports then it seems a shame to use an analogue connection, especially if it doesn't work well with this combination of hardware (these devices do tend to be hit-and-miss).

TLDR; Buy an HDMI cable.
