Connecting 2 devices through 1 cable

Hello all,

I have a virgin super hub router which is installed in my living room but my computer is located in another room. The computer connects wirelessly, but I also have a voipfone that has a fixed connection via an Ethernet cable running through the wall to the router.

I now want to also hook my computer up via Ethernet instead of the wireless so I can then hook up to my ps3 directly to the network and watch videos in the living room without wirelessly streaming as this is very glitchy.

My question is, would I be best running another separate cable through the wall to connect the computer to the router, or can I use a switch? I don't want to lose any significant connection speed or interfere with the phone as both devices will be used at the same time, but ideally do not want the hassle of drilling more holes etc.

If I can use a switch then will I need to buy 2 switches, one connecting each wire to separate router ports to then the single cable, then one of the end to connect computer and phone, or just one?

Thanks for your help!

I'm a bit confused of where each device is in what room, any chance of a diagram? But from the sounds of things you'll only need one gigabit switch, one port from the switch to the router, and the rest of the ports to the devices you want connected.

Thanks for the reply, below is the current setup, I want the computer to be connected to the router through a wired connection instead though:

So just to confirm, running a single cable from the router, through the wall to a switch then plug the computer and voipfone into the switch will be fine? Do the devices not need their own individual port on the router or does it not matter?

As long as the voip phone doesnt need a specific port on hub reserved for phone's running a single cable and a switch will work fine.

If the cable that is already run is atleast cat5e (it should say somewhere on the cable) you will be fine for gigabit as long as the super hub has gigabit ports. Id reccomend a gigabit switch eaither way though.

Thanks for the reply not sure whether the phone needs its own port so will have to get in touch with the phone company to check. I do know it has its own web interface you connect on the local host like the router though. The cable is CAT6a

Yep just put a Gigabit switch in, quick nice and easy job mate.

I highly doubt the VoIP phone needs a dedicated cable... Switch does the job just fine!
