I currently have a HP Procurve 1410 8 Port Switch connected to my router. They are in different rooms. Nothing is connected to my router other than the switch and incoming phone line.
My switch is now full (router, sonos, nas x 2, ps3, mac mini, sky box, etc etc)
I am planning to buy a HP 1410 16 port switch and use that instead of the 8 port one as I need more sockets for a new QNAP, AV Amp, Dune HD. I would like to move the 8 port switch to another room. I can't get a cable between this location and the router easily, but putting a cable between the 2 switches is no issue at all.
This switch would only be used for occasionally connecting my laptop when I want to move large files (BD rips mainly so about 20 to 30 gb a pop) to the NAS or QNAP.
Do I need a crossover cable or is a straight through one ok? I already have a straight through cable installed but I can easily tie a cross over cable onto the end of it and pull it through. Or would I be better connecting the 8 port switch to the router directly? I could do it if push comes to shove but would rather not.
Router is about to be changed to a Billion 7800N.
Thx
