I have a single Ethernet cable running to my entertainment center and over the years have added more and more device that required a internet connection, i have in the pasted just used wireless connection but the speeds are so crap compared to a wired connection i now want to have all my devices wired.

Ive used a Ethernet Adapter 1-2 Splitter before which seemed to be a bit hit and miss (need to make sure 1 device was powered off to be able to use the other), so im wondering what options i have available to me?, the more discrete the better and if at all not a powered device.....or though im not sure such a device exists, in which case a device that could be powered over USB would be a good substitute as i can leave i hooked up to the PC USB

USB powered switches do exist if you hunt around. They're very expensive for what they are.

If you're willing to do a bit of diy you could probably modify something like a
TL-SF1005D to run from USB. It's rated at 5V and 0.6A which is close enough to standard USB.

Another option is buy a switch that can be powered via PoE. You would place the PoE injector next to your router, the cable going from the router to the switch (through the PoE injector) will be able to power the switch.

It's quite a specific feature to search for. 'Can be powered via PoE', not just a PoE switch.

TP-Link do a fairly tiny 5-port switch, I use one for my consoles. Requires mains power but I can't see why that's really an issue here.

This.

A Poe powered switch would do this for you.
