connecting 970 gpu 8pin 6pin to psu

Hi Everyone,

I know that this might belong in the psu section but that doesn't get as much love as the gpu threads! I got some good advice on my last post and have just received a lovely EVGA ssc 970 acx 2.0 (from OC, obviously) to replace my 670 sli set-up (birthday present from the wife!)...

I'm having problems installing the new card. My psu (modular) has 4 x 6+2 pin connectors (2+2) but the EVGA has 8+6 connectors. My previous cards had 2x6 pin.

I've tried all combinations but the card powers up (fans start up) but then dies. The screen displays a 'DVI-I no signal' message.

Do I need a new PSU?

I'm sure it's a power issue but any advice would be welcome. I've tried both PCI lanes on my MOBO. I work unusual hours and really want this sorted asap, I'm willing to speak to someone who may help as well as check replies!

Hi,

Have you connected the power cables correctly?

You use a 6+2 from the PSU to make the 8 pin connector and the 6 pin part of a 6+2 for the 6 pin connector leaving the extra 2 pins unconnected.

If it still doesn't work with the power cables correctly connected make sure you have the latest motherboard BIOS.

Thanks. I'll try it now and report back in a few minutes. Would it make a difference if i boot with the hdmi or dvi-i?

I have 4 sets of 6+2 (2 cables with 2x 6+2's at the end) from my psu. I have tried both with 1 6+2 into the 8 pin on the gpu and the 2nd using the 6 into 6.

It boots and the fans spin but then dies. Just noticed the 'boot device led' flashes red on the mobo. Both dvi and hdmi are connected.

How would i upgrade my mobo bios without a screen?

I must sound like a noob...I really appreciate your input.

Old GFX card if you have one or onboard GFX if the the mobo has it.

Looking at the product page for the P8Z77-V it looks like it has DVI and VGA ports.

I've obviously missed something as my old cards are also not outputting a signal. I'm giving up and trying tomorrow.
