hi guys i have just setup a dg384 gt and been on line and have 3 pc,s plus an xbox connected via the wires i have named the ssid and network pass word for the wireless my sons ps3 searches for the wireless connection but fails , what settings should we use ? I'm on wpa at the moment what other settings do i need any advice would be welcomed.

Have you got any access control on the wireless? I had mine set to only allow certain mac's access to the wireless so it could be that. What actual error do you get, are you doing a custom or easy setup on the ps3? I don't think it matters what encryption you use, I use WPA and it's fine. You will have nightmares using that router (I have DG834PN) with the PS3 wireless when you get connected though, I resort to having mine cabled because on wireless I get booted off the psn network and out of games for no apparent reason but it works fine wired.

Welcome to the World of the PS3's flaky wireless connection. It's one of the main reasons I bought a PS3, my big TV is in a different room and it's not applicable to run a cable, but I can't play any on-line games on it due the blasted thing always disconnecting from the PS Network. Sometimes it stays connected for an hour or two, but the majority of the time it wont even sign me in at all.

I am gonna bet that you have old out of date firmware for your router.
(you can check the current version in the web interface and compare it to Netgear's site). Upgrade it and try again. Failing that it oculd just be you are too far away from your router or there is too much interference or walls?

You say your 3 PCs and 360 are wired? Do you not have any other wireless devices you could try?

I have the same router and have connected to my PS3 using WPA fine.

iv got the latest firmwarev1.02.19 which according to netgear is the latest. the ps3 is only 8.10 feet away next door , i have just setup the router yesterday manually and it works OK withe the cables for the pc,s and xbox i configured the wireless network setup the ssid and network key ,set it ti wpa-psk and set the mode to auto then when theps3 is fired up it sees the ssid and we put in the network key the ps3 scans and comes up failed and thats as far as we get.

PS i have a wireless rangmax usb adapter would it work with it ?

Sounds more like your router tbh, I had simliar issues before port forwarding. I've had faultless connectivity now.

OP have you tried using just WEP? Turning uPnP off on the router and manually opening some ports?

edit: is your router the DG834? http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/DG834/PlayStation_Network.htm

I see. The only thing I can suggest is to try other wireless devices in your house, to verify it works as this is the 1st time you are using the wireless function. You could turn off the security (disable WPA-PSK) just to test as well.

I have used your exact router before (with a slightly older version of firmware and the one you mention) and used it to wifi PS3s fine (mine and other people's).

Your rangemax adpater is only useable on PCs, not on the PS3.

If you wish, I can test my own one (it is wired at the moment). Or remote to yours and check settings. I know mine works though and so do many other people's ones I have setup (with older firmwares than yours), via Wifi, normally WPA-PSK.

DO NOT FORWARD THESE ports. This will help you for connectivity to the PlayStation Network and some games. It will not help you connect via wifi, which is your current problem. And in actual fact those ports listed ARE WRONG. I do not know why so many websites insist that port 80 needs to be forwarded to the PS3?

Iirc port 80 is http, which would be required (although not that recommended) if you used the browser. Sorry I didn't check the site fully.

No,No,NO. Does your PC browse the web OK without you forwarding port 80 to it? Does your laptop. In fact if you only have 1 port 80 how does your router know which of your multiple web browsing devices in your house to forward it to? Are houses with only 1 IP address and more than 1 web browsing machine not able to browse the web? It cannot be required, but not recommended!.

WEB BROWSING NEEDS NO PORTS FORWARDED TO YOUR MACHINE. The only people ho should ever be forwarding ports such as 80 to their machine are people hosting web sites/servers. (I am just bolding bits so people do not make the same mistake!).

Get shot of wireless and get some network plugs. I've got them for my ps3 and I've never looked back tbh

While this likely won't make any difference to your PS3 problem (though it can't hurt!), get the latest firmware for your router from these guys > http://dgteam.ilbello.com/

I have the same router as yourself and run their firmware. It brings loads of features you will likely never, ever use, but it also brings many improvements over the standard Netgear firmware. You may never notice any difference at all, but as I've said already, it won't hurt either.

Further to that, I had no end of trouble with the PS3 and connecting it wirelessly to the router. Drop-outs, slow downloads, horrible pings. I run it wired now and it works perfectly.

Check router positioning too, It doesnt want to be with other electrical appliances, and generally the further away from the ground the better. I had crap signal over wireless for ages, Reason being, I had my cordless phone and charging bay sat on top of it. Doh

I thought port forwarding only applies to the specified IP address. Which is why you have to give your PS3 a static IP and then NAT masks this behind your external address. I don't recommend port 80 being open at all but iirc without uPnP you'll actually need the port open for HTTP requests.

You are confusing outgoing port requests with incoming. It is incoming that is normally "closed" on most NAT routers. Outgoing requests can be blocked but "most" people do not, else like you say they would not be able to even browse the web without additional configuration. If people wish to block outgoing traffic they "normally" use a software firewall on their machine.

Incoming ports are "usually" for "hosting" or "services" that need other people to connect to your machine without you initiating the connection (i.e. Hosting games, hosting chat, receiving files, hosting a web site, or for people connecting to you unsolicited etc).

have unplugged my PC via wired and plugged in a usb power max connector and rebooted the PC, it loads up and windows loads ssid and asks for network key which i do , it then says it is acquiring a network address and sits there for ever looking - what gives ?

When I switched to Sky I got a new router which was set to WPA had no luck at all with it and the PS3, (opening ports, set IPs etc), switched it to good old WEP and it worked fine first time.

Edit: my old router was a dg834 gt same as you I believe, it also worked fine in WEP, with no other settings fiddled about with.

No, mine is a WAG160N. All relevant ports are forwarded, DMZd the PS3, it's got it's own IP address, the router's firmware is up to date, uPnP is off (also tried with it on) and yet it still randomly disconnects me from PSN.
