I have done this before by changeing the ip ranges on the routers but I have been trying for hours and cant remember excactly how it works. I had them both running dhcp I think. The wireless router is a linksys wrt54gs.
Thanks

I think you should turn on the DHCP server on the modem router and turn off the wrt54gs DHCP.

On the wrt54gs set the gateway to the ip of the modem router and set the DHCP type to "DHCP forwarder" with the DHCP server set again to the ip of the modem router.

It depends how you connect them.
If you just connect a switch port on both, you should disable DHCP on one and make sure both don't have the same IP (while not being in different subnets).
If you connect one to the other's WAN port, you'd need different subnets, DHCP on both, two lots of NAT and a whole world of hell follows.
