connecting htpc to av amp

I'm a bit of a noob with av stuff and am thinking of buying my first av receiver so...
whats the best way to connect my htpc up so i get surround sound? My pc has HDMI video and audio so do i connect the HDMI cable to the av receiver and this then outputs the video to the tv and also outputs surround sound? This would mean i only need 1 x hdmi cable, is that right?

No.

Which receiver do you have?

HDMI would be the ideal connection.

i havent bought it yet but was thinking of the yamaha rxv667. I just wanted to make sure of how to set it up before buying anything and wasnt sure if i had to run the hdmi out of my pc to the tv or amp and what cables i would need.

In that case; connect all devices to the receiver by HDMI and the receiver to the TV.
