connecting i/o headers

when fitting the front panel headers, is the writing suppossed to be on the outside of the connector ?

Presume you mean the connectors for the power switch/LED etc.
If so, then you can connect switches any way round and they will work.
LED's if connected wrongly just wont work but will not be damaged and should work if you reverse the connection. Just make ure you connect the correct pairs to the appropriate pairs of pins on the mobo

its usually only the connectors for ide light & power light that have to go a certain way round. In these cases the small mark on the plug is +.
