Apologies if this doesn't make much sense but it's a rushed post so please try to bare with me!

Situation is I have a adsl router without wireless wired to a pc that has wireless. I've tried setting up an adhoc connection so that my iPhone can connect to the internet via the pc's wireless, but when I actually try to connect it asks me for a username and password.

I've not setup or seen anywhere to setup a username and password. I've configured a WPA key but it doesn't accept this. Even if I leave the network completley open with no encrpytion it still asks me for a username and password when I try and connect from the iPhone.

This is all on XP btw.

Any ideas?

Does the wireless on your PC act as an access point, or as I suspect it is just thinking that the iPhone is trying to connect to the XP Machine and so asks for a username and password.

Well I've set it up as per all the guides I can find for setting it up as an ad hoc wireless network. So as far as I can see I've got it setup correctly.

So it works with WEP strange

Yeah. From what I've read it's like the WPA it's doing on ad-hoc has something to do with enterprise that the iPhone doesn't support?

I don't get it really but all I know is that when I set it to WEP-shared it asks me for the wep key, but WPA asks me for a username and password.
