So I just got my new laptop, it's running Windows 7, and I want to connect it up with my desktop so I can share files and such between the two. The desktop is running Vista, and both are connected to the internet, the desktop via ethernet and the laptop wifi. However, I'm having trouble doing the whole sharing thing, they can see each other in the network folder but access is denied and I don't know how to allow access. Any help appreciated.

Which folders are you wishing to share?
I believe you would need to have your share permissions set for each individual folder you are wishing to share between the two machines.

I want to share the external hard drive connected to the desktop, and some folders in my documents. Also a public folder so I can put stuff there I want to share.

Have you set up sharing of the drive connected to the desktop?

Right Click > Properties > Sharing (i think)

Make sure it has been set as shared and you may need to include user permissions such as "Everyone"
