i asked in a previous post how to transfer movies/large files etc from my desktop to laptop..... I was using my wireless lan.... which was transferring 9/10mbs / second.

Somebody mentioned using a firewire cable instead... so I bought one.

The laptop is the smaller 3 pin one and the desktop the larger one....

So how do I transfer files using this ?

TIA

If your cable is the larger kind on both ends you need to get an adapter from a well known electrical bits shop for £3ish to put on the end. XP supports firewire networking but tbh i've never found the need despite having the cables. that said 400/800mbit could be handy for using another box as a NAS without the need to upgrade to gigabit etc.

nope - bought the correct cable ... 3 pin end for laptop
4 pin for the desktop.

I can access files via the wireless network

but am struggling to set it up via the 1394 connection... anybody help - must the wireless lan be disabled when plugging in the firewire cable ?

What IPs have you set on the 1394 network? Make sure it's a different subnet from the wireless network. Then connect to the the shares on the other machine using the new IPs instead of the hostnames.
