I have got a coaxial SPDIF port on the back of my pc via my asus p5k pro motherboard, can i use any old coaxial wire to connect straight to receiver, I ask as i saw this comment on a product on ebay...

Sound card SPDIF interconnects are very rare and this one not to be confused with alternative cables sold elsewhere. Custom built with the professional studio grade 'true 75-ohms' silver plated LC-OFC S/PDIF-Pro digital audio cable. Hand gold-solder terminated with high quality ProLink 3.5mmJack to RCA (phono) plugs.

Many thanks

Any cable will do, its a digital signal so does not suffer from signal loss like analogue connections.
The above is nothing more than marketing spiel in much the same way you get Optical cables with gold connectors!!
