A few months ago I hooked my PC upto my Sony LCD TV, via the standard VGA cable to the TVs 'PC Input' socket. My video card is a Radeon HD4870 and the TV is capable of Full HD 1920x1080, yet I was only able to get a max resolution of 1360x768 (or thereabouts).

If I bought a video card with an HDMI OUTPUT, would I be able to get true 1920x1080 resolution on my TV?

If youve a dvi output just use a dvi to hdmi adapter and it should work at that res With your existing set up . I've used this method with a desktop and it works . No sound though.

my 1080p TV has a VGA port as well as HDMI. The manual says that the VGA is 720p only. I've never got round to trying the PC on it.

Ahah, I do have one of these handy TBH and haven't tried it. Will give it a go tonight.

Sound-wise... if it was a true HDMI output to HDMI input, I would theoretically get sound as well as picture - is this correct in principal?

I can't guarantee anything, but the specification of 4870 on AMD/ATI site is here:
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desk.../Pages/ati-radeon-hd-4870-specifications.aspx

Just highlighting the bit you might be of interest...

HDMI output support

* All display resolutions up to 1920x1080
* Integrated HD audio controller with support for stereo and multi-channel (up to 7.1) audio formats, including AC-3, AAC, DTS, DTS-HD & Dolby True-HD4, enabling a plug-and-play audio solution over HDMI

I had no sound either until I found an ATI adapter (6141054300G) and that sorted the issue. The only problem ios to play any games on my TV I have to disable x-fire as it doent recognise the signal :(
