Howdy,

OK because BT stopped ISDN Dad has gone with a package with AOL in the mean time. Family PC downstairs. Connected via USB to a ISDN box. AOL Software 9.0. My PC upstairs connected to a wireless router which is wirlessly connected to the downstairs PC. Now I know it can be done as I was happily sharing my BT ISDN connection before we got cut off but now because AOL insist you use there software I am stupmed as to how to share the connection.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is the PC downstairs connected using the gAyOL software? You could bin all of that and if your using a router, not a modem, you can just bung the user/pass into there. This way the machines will be free of that crappy software and both machines will be able to connect fine to the net. :)

What model is your router?

Without using proxy software, you can't share AOL dialup.

You can't use it without the software (you can if you have ADSL, but we're not talking about ISDN here).

Darn. So it would need to go through a ISDN router then. Something which I don' have.

Damn GayOL.

Cheers guys

can't you use aol 5 with ICS?

No, because it doesn't actually make a dial up connection for you to share.

Only way to share an AOL connection, as has been said, is to use an ADSL router.

there is definlty and old version of AOL which works with ICS, used to be on aol a long time ago. (and just came back for £9.99 1mb unlimited :p )

i have aol broadband n i just got a router/modem (netgear dg834) and i shove an ethernet cable in each computer and put the email address and password in and wa-la, connection without crappy gayol software.

IIRC, there is nothing stopping you getting your own broadband account with a different provider....screw sharing with downstairs! :D I'm going to do this with blueyonder (will be ringing them later this evening!)

Yeh will the n00bs please read all post before trying to help. I have ISDN and no router downstairs so it's not possible for me to shove a cable in each computer

i am 100% sure you can use a certain old version of AOL, or there is nothing stopping you setting up a proxy server on the main machine.

Cheers Sone. Will look into the proxy server thing. Still... will have ADSL on the 24th so I suppose I should look at buying some CAT6 UTP cable and a crimper kit. I wonder how my Dad will take it when he sees UTP cable on the stairs lol
