I need some help with a friends laptop. It had Norton and McAfee installed and were uninstalled as AVG is better I told him. Since this happened the laptop cannot connect to the internet.

AVG is not installed yet. Just the others uninstalled.

It is at my house now and is connected to my network and says internet connected too. However IE wont display any web page. I have used CMD to ping Sky.com and Google and results come back.

It is running Vista.

Any suggestions?

Are you saying it got a reply from those pings?

Probably a firewall policy that is blocking HTTP. If McAfee and Norton are gone check the windows firewall to see if as a parting gift they set that to lockdown.

Also check what services are running to see if any of the previous stuff is still on there.

download the norton and mcaffee uninstall utilities and run them both,

also check in IE tools, options, internet connections, lan settings - make sure no proxy server is set.

as as said by jb make sure the windows firewall is not blocking IE.

Windows firewall is on and there are no Norton or anything else there. I am just going to check the Exceptions list. IE isn't on there so should I need to add that program?

Edit: I have added IE to the list and still no luck. The address bar always shows http:///. Why the extra / ?I have treid loads of things to resolve this. It connects to my network and can see my PC and play music of my networks 1TB drive.

Ok nothing running in processes or service regarding Norton. However there are 3 windows updates to be installed and one of them is IE8 for vista, maybe thats the reason. They are just installing now. Report back in a bit.

still run the norton and mcrappie uninstall utilities... unless you have fixed the issue... (you have to download them from the respective web sites)
