Connecting to some steam multiplayer games not working

Hi,

I have recently been generous enough to buy my mate two games (each costing in excess of £2) so we could play a couple of multiplayer games. I bought Company of Heroes and yesterday Empire: Total War.

The problem is neither of us can connect to each other's computer or randoms from the internet. Messages Like "Failed to Connect: Host not Responding". This is with both CoH and Empire

Lengthy googles and this seems a problem with some games and a couple of solutions have been:

1. Try a different router (we both have bebroadband speedtouch routers)
2. Try a VPN such as Hamachi (going to try this tonight)

the only other game I play multiplayer is Counterstrike and that works fine.

Is this a known problem and has anyone else had it? Is there a list of games to try and avoid for multiplayer problems?

try turning off windows firewall and seeing if you can connect or what ever you use if you havn't tryed that already

yes we'd done the obvious stuff, turn off firewalls, port forward, we even turned off the router firewalls but still no luck.

However, we've just used the hamachi vpn and all worked perfectly (sfter working out you had to play as if it was over the internet and not LAN)!
