I have made this post on the XBOX 360 Forums with no luck...

http://www.xbox360forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=823971#post823971

I'm having problems connecting to XBOX live. My setup is:

Wireless D-Link router downstairs, PC with Wireless upstairs, XBOX 360 connected to PC. I've set the Wireless network connection to be shared as instructed, but upon testing the connection, IP Address is confirmed but fails at DNS. I've tried setting all appropriate IP, subnet, gateway and DNS to match the D-Link routers manually, but this shows no change.

I know that our connection can work, as it connects perfectly when directly connected to the wireless router downstairs, but unfortunately it isn't an option to run cables. If you can help me get this set up I'd be very grateful.

Open your network connections page, select your ethernet connection (xbox - pc) then hold down ctrl and click on your wireless connection (to the internet/router). Then right click and choose "Bridge connections" and you should be sorted.

*EDIT*
Set your xbox networking settings to automatic as well.

Phew! Didn't think I'd get back online then, here's what just happened...

I bridged the wireless and the ethernet connections (after it first warned me you cannot have one of the connections as shared, so I un-shared it). Then it looked like you'd cracked it, the wireless connection showed connected again and the bridge was showing. BUT, it wouldn't connect to the internet! It said it was connected, showing signal strength etc, but everything suggested otherwise on the PC. I tried the XBOX LIVE test just for the sake of it and, as expected, it failed on the first test.

It appears this bridge thing seems to be the solution, but what am I missing that's stopping me connecting once bridged. Especially since it shows that it's connected!

For now I've removed both connections form the bridge, deleted it, and had do 'repair connection' to get back online.

Right, just found a guide to do this:

http://www.xboxlivetheguide.co.uk/XBoxLiveTheGuide3.php?title=How do I setup Bridging

Which seems to explain that the main cause of not being able to connect after is that a lot of wireless cards don't support 'Compatability Mode'. Which I wouldn't be surprised at since my wireless card was a budget, generic one. I might try the guide it links to to force compatability mode, but I fear I'll end up breaking things!

Well...I bit the bullet and tried it. I set the wireless car to 'Force Compatibility Mode enabled', yet still couldn't connect to the internet after. I think that if I could have, that would have been it. Is this simply a case that my wireless card is too budget for something like this? I hate to accept defeat and shell out £55 for the official wireless adapter when I'm so close to this!

I don't think the problem is the card. I still think it sounds like a setup issue. I used to do this exact same setup. However, I need more info. What are the LAN IPs of the router, your PC (which should have two) and your 360. It is best to set them manually IMO and don't forget that the setup will require two IP ranges.

EDIT: A few more details:

It should go:

router 192.168.0.1 --- PC 192.168.0.2 (wireless adapter) <bridged> PC 192.168.1.1 (wired) --- 192.168.1.2 Xbox 360

DNS for the 360 should be 192.168.1.1
