connecting tower to laptop via vga cable?

can anyone tell me if i need to do anything to make this work? my monitor died last night and my nans laptop (old aspire 5335) has a vga port but when i connected the cable, the screen just kept flicking between low res and high res of the laptops' desktop, options for multiple screens and whatnot kept appearing and dissappearing at the same time, i wasnt able to see my pcs' desktop at all

I think the laptop vga is output only.

ok cheers for the response, just got off the phone with the store i got the monitor from and i can get a full refund or exchange so il be taking it up later and buying an asus 22" from this site when the money goes back into my account

I tried this once a long time ago when I wanted a second monitor temporarily, unfortunately as above, it is / was a no go.

If your desktop is professional edition or better you can try using terminal service on the laptop to log into it, if they're on the same network that is.
