Connecting USB modem disables network card

Connecting USB modem blocks LAN

The laptop is connected to the office printer and shared on the network, everyone on the network is able to use the printer with no problems..... until the modem is plugged into the laptop, when for some reason the laptop disappears from view and cannot even be pinged from the cmd console.

Any ideas?

What modem and what ISP ?

When i first posted this, i included the name of the modem, but no one replied as it is one i doubt any of you have heard of.

I was wondering whether this could be a known problem on other usb modems & laptops - maybe a power thing, because if i use the modem on my desktop, the network card still operates no problems.

For you information, the modem as a Samba 75 (GPRS) and the isp is MTN Rwanda
