Hi Guys

I'm looking for some advice, I have a 5.1 Panasonic surroundsound and a SkyHD box.

I have an optical cable running from my 40" LED to the SS unit and HDMI from SkyHD >> SS and TV >> SS

Is this the correct way? I have to turn the SS on every time and set it to D-IN otherwise the sounds comes via the TV only

If I went SkyHD >> SS I wouldn't get SS when watching a film stored on my NAS for instance would I?

Is the way I have it correct or is there a more effective route

Thanks Gents

You're using the TV as a hub for Sky and the signal from the NAS using what... the TV's in-built media player? And this Panasonic surround kit has just an optical input?? If yes to both then you're wired up as best the gear you own will allow.

Using the TV as a hub is convenient but it can be a bit of a signal quality bottleneck. The main issue is very few TVs pass the datastreams for both Dolby Digital and DTS surround from their HDMI sources to the optical. Some source sound gets converted to basic stereo. This means then that the discrete channel information for the rear speakers and the center and the sub are lost. They're folded in to the stereo signal, but can never be fully recovered. You might notice that Sky's surround sound never sounds quite as precise as DVDs.

The second issue is what the surround sound kit is capable of doing with the sound via optical. Panasonic got some criticism for not handling DTS via optical on quite a few of its surround kits.

These issues can all be resolved, but you'd need to invest in new gear. So as I said at the outset, you probably have the best possible from the gear you have.

All you can really do to improve the user experience without replacing amps etc. is to grab a universal remote and program it up to sort out the input selection etc. for you.

OK I've had a read and play and enabled VIERA on the SS which "should" turn the SS on/off when I turn the TV on/off but as yet this still doesn't seem to work? I have set the tv to "external speaker" and if I have the SS on and turn off the TV the SS goes off with it (automatically) but when I turn the TV back on the SS doesn't kick in?

Must be a setting somewhere that I have missed :(

What your trying to do should work. When I turn my tv on with the normal remote my amp turns on and the volume controls the amps volume not the tv.

Indeed! The opposite works when I turn the tv off but the on part is more important really

Will keep searching

Thanks
