Connection cutting out

Over the last few days my internet connection keeps disconnecting. I have to go downstairs and disconnect the modem and router, if I plug it back in everythings back to normal. On average I'd say it stays active for about 3 hours before I have to reset it and during this time it'd quite often slow down to a crawl.

It's never happened before. The computers cant even see the router. The only other time I have to reset the internet is after downloading a lot in BitComet, but the computers can still access the router its just that no webpages load. And I havent downloaded anything for about a week now so its not because of this.

I'm on virgin media 4mb cable and I have a Netgear WGT624 v3 and I live in Reading if that makes any difference.

Any ideas what could be up?

Cable doesn't have DSL filters.
It sounds like the router locking up - is your torrent client still running, even if you aren't downloading?

sounds like the router is handling too many connections.

is it a new router or has it worked properly before?

Im in Bristol and on virgin. For the past week the modem has been randomly disconnecting and often running at a crawl.

I don't use a router and am connected straight to the modem so am thinking that it's a problem with virgin. Perhaps it could be the same for you.

Cheers for the replies. Havent changed anything, router has been solid for about 18 months and the torrent client is definately off so I'd guess its probably Virgin's end. I'll give it a few days then I'll give Virgin a ring.

on 2mb con i was getting disconnected from Live when playing games for a few seconds at a time every 30 secs or so,i complained and eventually went to 20 mb and its been fine now but i dont think i should have to go to such a higher speed jsut so i can play without connection interupts

If you have a spare cat5 cable try a swap to see if it makes any difference. Unlikely to be the problem but I have fixed 3 internet problems for friends this year caused by CRAP cat5 cable supplied by Telewest.

It probably is virgin at fault but if you have a spare network cable it's easy to check. I know of at least 2 friends who have noticed poor service since Virgin took over Telewest and this also is in Bristol.

Looks like broadband in Bristol will soon match First Bus. :(

I'll swap over the cable but it should be ok because it's not the one they supplied and it's been ok for 18 months. Still seems to be ok since my original post. It slowed a bit about 8pm last night but it hasnt disconnected.

Hopefully it was just a one-off dodgy patch.

Thanks for your reply.

I only recently replaced all my cables with belkin cat5e cables. Nice short half metre ones.

The net is running fine at the moment and i'm currently getting 2.25MBs off the blueyonder games site so looks like it's not a problem with my cables.

Since 20MB has been introduced the service has been getting poorer. Perhaps they are now over subscribed on the ubr I am on?
