Connection Issues

Hello,
This is a problem which I have been experiencing for a quite a while now and am not getting anywhere close to fixing by contacting the ISP technical support.

Our ISP is AOL and I know what everyone says about AOL but I don't use their web browser/software as it is in my opinion rubbish so basically all I use from AOL is the connection which is great when it works and the email service.

The issue which I have been experiencing is rnadomly timed connection dropouts. The connection will just drop and it takes me a while to find something that actually brings everything back online.

I also noticed today because it was offline when I booted into Windows this morning that in the Networking & Sharing Center in Vista it was showing a green line in the diagram from my PC's icon to the routers icon and then another green line from the router icon to the globe representing the internet to say that all was well but it obviously was not as I just could not access any websites whatsoever.

If I go to the routers web based control panel, the status tells me that the internet is online but I go ahead and do a reboot of the router and only sometimes it is solved using this but other times it is not.

Can anyone help me out to try and sort this nasty problem as it has been driving me up the wall for the last couple of months.

Thanks

Regards,
Neil

Since we had the issue, I have tried the following routers:

  • D-Link G604T
  • Linksys WRT somethingorother
  • Linksys WAG200G
  • D-Link DSL-2640R

All have the same issue

Thanks

Regards,
Neil

Everything there seems ok to me.

Have you added any new phones/sky connections etc and not placed filter on?

Have you tried just resetting the router?

Have you thought of leaving AOL? (Always Off LIne)

No sky or fax machines used. All brand new filters too in all sockets

Have you tried just resetting the router?

This sometimes fixes it but it keeps dieing much more frequently than it really should.

Yes, I want to leave AOL but my dad won't let us. He still uses the aol software on his pc and complains that it's slow. I keep telling him to use a better browser such as Opera or even at the least IE7 and then use Thunderbird or even Outlook to gather his emails. I even offer to set it up and he still point blank refuses.

I seem to be the only one in this damn house that wants to fix this problem as it is driving me up the wall

im with aol and have had a really bad connection over the last few months but i just complain over and over and yesterday it seems to be back to normal. I wouldnt mind leaving aol but im tied into a long contract now with a PS3 that iv sold so will be pretty hard to get out of.

Why would the fact you have sold a PS3 have anything to do with your contract to AOL?

After trying that many routers, my concern would be down to the telephone wiring and beyond.
Have you repositioned your router or done any rewiring?
Also pick up the phone when you get a drop out. I always had really bad crackling on the line whenever I was getting dropouts. I bought some decent cabling, filters and new faceplate and rewired the extension lead to the router and it has been steady ever since.
