Hi guys,

I'm about to move into my student accomodation for 2nd year at Strathclyde. Went through a couple of days ago to get my keys and enquired about internet while I was there. They informed me that there are 2 ADSL packages available; a 256kbps at £16 a month and a 2mbps at £28 a month, as well as a £25 connection fee for both. At current market prices these seem a bit extortionate to me. In their online FAQ, they claim this is a good deal due to the fact that a regular consumer would have to pay an addition £10 a month for line rental - ignoring the idea that a regular consumer would use this for a telephone.

I don't really know how to confront them about this and even if its worth it - is there anything I can do?

The website is http://www.u-want.com/

Thanks for any help.

You spoken to IT services in the Curran building? They might be able to help or offer some advice. Good luck getting it sorted.

ntl broadband :)

2meg connection 17:99 a month no line rental cost tell them they're ripping you off big stylee :) oh and no connection fee :)

Taken from the faq:

I already have an internet account with another Internet Service Provider and want to dial them via the telephone socket in my room. Can I?

You will not be able to dial-in to an alternative ISP, but you should be able to collect e-mail from them via their POP mail server using your U-WANT Internet connection. Please call the U-WANT Internet Helpdesk on 0870 242 0019 if you need advice on setting this up.

:/

Yeah. Your choices are U-Want, U-Want, or U-Want.
I wouldn't expect it to work with an ADSL modem (or router either) - I'd imagine you'll just get an RJ45 on the wall.

You're stuck with it, part of the deal unfortunately. Nice market for the provider though, completely captive and no competition
not to mention easy to exploite
