Hello folks, I have an odd problem with my broadband connection and I'm not sure how to sort it.

The connection speed is great when downloading stuff, and browsing/streaming stuff rarely gives me any problems, and playing games is occasionally OK... But for some reason every now and then I lose connection repeatedly, games are completely unplayable for more than afew seconds, even though the connection seems to be fine for everything else.

Now it is wireless and I know the best thing is to wire it up, but that's not possible. I'm just curious if anyone knows the cause of this because it seems a bit weird. The ping is always low on the severs I choose, browser works fine, but keep losing connection (in game).

Any insights gratefully received :)

Have you tried with a cable even temporarily? To see if this solves it. If it does you could look into power line adapters or something like that.

Yeah I have had it wired in the past, didn't get any problems then - but it wasn't for that long and the problem only happens for a day or so randomly every so often so might have missed it.

I have had a look at the power line adaptors, think I will pick some up if I can't sort it any other way. I was just wondering if this is fixable in the router settings or something? (I'm a bit of a network dumbass)

If its only your computer/laptop doing it out of all the ones in the house then it is most likely something to do with your wireless card. However if computers in the house / ipads are having issues then it might be work having a look at the router. You could run inssider to see what wireless networks are around you and move to a channel with less people on it. that might improve quality. However in general i dont really rate wireless for playing games it can be too unpredictable.

It is all the things not just the desktop, I downloaded inssider, that's a handy thing - thanks for that. But it looks like there's not much to do since there's not much interference and the channel it's on seems the best.

I blame sky *shakes fist*

I'm on channel 6 now, inssider says that channel 1 is comparable but there's no point switching. I can't use the cable simply because it would involve running it out of the bedroom, across the hall, downstairs, across another hall and into the far side of the living room... :)

The PC used to live in the living room but we're having a wood burner put in, and the guy is taking his sweet time, so I'm having to suck up not being wired for the time being.

I could actually run the cable out of the window and down in through the other window, but it's getting a bit nippy out now...
