Not sure if anyone will have any ideas on this but it's worth a shot I guess.

Basically I had been on Pipex 512k service for about 3 years or so and when the free upgrades to 1 meg went round last summer my line failed the test and I remained on the 512 service. Anyway I decided to give the regrade a try a couple of weeks ago as the BT checked had changed and was saying I could now recieve up to 2 meg. I put in a regrade to the 1 meg service and it went through a couple of days later.

All good so far.... however I am connecting at 2 meg speeds and download speeds reflect this (at all times - there was/is suppsoedly some offer on where it is 2 meg off peak atm but mine is constant) However my connection frequenlty just 'dies'. It stays connected but wont send or recieve any data and just sits there until I manually disconnect the modem and reconnect it and it's fine again.

When I am connected it works flawlessly, full speeds, constant data flow, no problems at all. My initial thought was that my line is having trouble sustaining the 2 meg service, but there is one other thing.... This only happens after 17:45 each day?!? It will usually happen every 1-2 hours after that time.

I have looked on various checkers and they report no problems with my exchange and friends on the same exchange have no problems either. My connection was flawless before and I have retained the same ip so assume I am on the same pipe.

I can't work out if this is a pipex problem, something my end or my exchange ?? Trying to get through to the tech support is a nightmare, I might be moving soon so not really motivated to spend ages on the phone trying to get through. I am being charged for the 1 meg service too, not the 2 meg service I am on - which is nice.

Any thoughts ?

Most likely your end, but without stats (ie attenuation/SNR) it's impossible to say.
You should find you get throttled back to 1Mbps soon enough too. Pipex's way is to upgrade you to 2Mbps, then throttle at their end.

I can't check any of that with my modem i'm afraid :(

If it is something my end do you not think it's odd that it only happens during the evening though or just coinicidence ?

Which modem?

Neither. SNR margin isn't constant, and does generally degrade in the evening.

I'm not sure what the modem is now, it's that long since I bought it. I did look into checking stats when I first got it and was feeling slightly less dense.

It's an internal PCI Alcatel modem of some description. It doesn't even say what it is on the driver CD, the manual just says ADSL PCI ALC Modem.

No idea then. Pipex could extract them with Whoosh.
First thing to try is to see if it works connected with no extensions, or better still, connected to the master socket by as short a bit of cable as possible.

Yeah that would be good thanks, I have sent you an email.

It has just done it about 5 minutes ago so there goes my 17:45 theory :p

Thanks for that, does that seem okay for 1mb though?

I suppose I better get on to pipex and see if they can put it put it down to that rather than being throttled on a 2mb line.

The standard BT disclaimer you agree to every time you access any of BT's systems.. surely you should be careful about whooshing people's lines for them?
