Connection Problems

Hello all,

Since upgrading my BT broadband account I received a new router called BT Home Hub. I added the port forward (27015) as always and played on CSS. However, ever since I have had problems.

If I got on the Steam Server browser and then attempt to open Firefox and visit a website I get "Firefox can't find the server". I can access the router website though. I have to restart my PC to regain access to internet websites.

Before receiving the router from BT I had a ping (when playing CSS) of around 20ms. Now it's 54. I've had to increase my ping limit on servers to 200 instead of 100, as all the servers pings now start at 56ms, instead of the old 12ms.

Sometimes the router will randomly freeze up.

I went to play a game of CSS last night while on Ventrilo and I played fine, moved servers and then every time I pressed a button there would be a delay and then I would continue to move in that direction or fire my weapon, as if I was holding the button down. I tried switching servers and still had the problem. My keyboard was working 100% fine. There wasn't any physically stuck buttons and I could type on MSN perfectly.

These problem only after I used the new router. Before the upgrade I had a netgear router and this were great. No problems, at all. Since the upgrade to ADSL2 (from ADSL) and the new router I've had these problems.

Any help or advise would be appreciated. I've attempted to call BT but they don't have a clue and usually read off an FAQ.

I did get a response a few months ago from someone at BT telling me about a method they use to prevent data loss and it increases the ping but after I replied with will it affect my connectivity if it gets turned off I never got another response. I think that's the only qualified tech on the whole support team but is impossible to track down to talk to for more assistance.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I have not used the BT Homehub but sounds like they have upgraded you to DSL Max (NOT Adsl 2) and when they did this they probably turned on Interleaving on the line this does increase ping times by about 20 - 40 ms but makes the line more stable.

In the home hub can you see the line stats if so look to see if it mentions Latency Type as FAST or Interleaved. If it is the later then the line has got inteleaving turned on.

Sorry, yes I think it was ADSL Max. Didn't realise there was a difference.

If I ask them to turn Interleaved will that cure any of my problems, other than the ping?

The hub doesn't mention Interleaved or FAST, but I remember seeing Interleaved in an email I mentioned in my post.

If you still have your netgear router try the connection with that and if you do not experience the problems you meantioned on the Netgear (outside of Ping delays) then the problem is definately down to the BT Home Hub have looked at the forums the Home Hub seems to be troublesome to say the least.

It would be best to post details of your line stats before anyone can advise if utrn off interleaving is the way to go.

I'll see if I can dig out the netgear router.

Based on your line stats I would not turn of the interleaving as you have a very high line attenuation and the signal to noise is a bit high.
