Connection Sharing Using Gateway

Hello all,

I currently have one of these, a desktop running Vista, a Laptop running XP and a Three Mobile Broadband Modem. The Three Modem is plugged into the Desktop with the Gateway connected via CAT5 to the desktop and the laptop wirelessly connecting to the Gateway.

My problem comes when I try to share the internet connection on the Desktop with the laptop, it just doesn't work. File sharing works perfectly and, using a different laptop with Vista, i'm able to perform that fancy media sharing thing as well so it's not a case that the computers can't communicate with each other. I believe the problem to lie with the fact that I'm using a gateway as opposed to a standard router as I think the gateway defaults to using it's own built in modem to connect to the internet instead of allowing the networked computers to use the Three modem.

Is there any one out there who may have experienced a similar problem and has possibly overcome it or will I just have to resort to getting a different router?

Thanks in advance,
Antar.

The router is probably issuing dynamic LAN ip addresses and will be the default gateway if your lan adapers properties are set to automatic. This is default behaviour for most routers and adapters.

Theres several ways to resolve it the easiest involves dumping the router but requires you to be able to connect by cable or wifi between the desktop and laptop, is this possibble?

I can share the internet connection using wireless network adapters but the range is too limited for what I need. Is there any way I can tell the router to not issue dynamic IP addresses?
