Hey guys,
So at the beginning of December I moved into a new house, its an old house and for whatever reason only has 1 phone line with 1 power plug socket also. Im a sky customer and in order to install my broadband and TV properly I had to invest in some Powerline Adaptors for the internet and do a tad of faffing around getting telephone extension cables tacked around the hallway of the house so that I could connect the phone socket to the powerline adapter whilst also plugging in the sky HUB for the internet.
Firstly I have an issue in that I can't seem to plug a phone in as whenever I do it just cuts the internet out. I presume im missing a piece here but ive not looked into it yet. Basically what I have tried is plugging the phone into the telephone socket through a filter on the extension cable, if I dont use this extension cable I don't get internet so that has to stay. Doing this however cuts off the internet, thus leaving us without a home phone, no biggy I thought until I just spend around £20 on phone bills calling utility companies and so on for other jobs in need of doing! :- Just fixed this!
Anyway the main reason im writing this is because my internet has been god awful. My other half spoke to a guy at sky before we moved who said I could get fibre optic broadband (which was what we were on) but due to its location it would be a slower speed (and they still charge the same?! wtf!), so fine we get broadband. I was willing to ignore the fact that it was almost half the speed of what I was getting previously for the same price but the actual quality of the internet hasn't been that great.
More notably over this christmas period im getting ridiculous coverage of internet, or so it seems!
What im getting confused by is the speed itself seems to be ok and im not having any issues using youtube or whatever else, my other half tells me facebook is fine and whatever other garbage she goes on. However whenever I try and play a game online it gets a bit stupid. For example I fired up battlefield 4 this morning and after about 10 minutes of being on the game I was kicked off by punkbuster for losing connection. Im aware that BF4 is currently under attack from China so I can see thats not an issue here (at least im hoping). So then I fired up Company of Heroes 2 to which after about 5 minutes of gameplay I encountered ridiculous lag spikes that were happening once every 10 seconds or less, the response time was around 5 seconds and eventually it kept disconnecting and then reconnecting.
Its been doing this all day and so im confused as to wheter its the fact that im on a powerline network, if its my sky broadband being rubbish or if its something wrong with gaming in general at the moment.
Anyone able to help?
