Hi all

Connectivity wise im am a little challenged ;) I have the master socket behind my front door miles away from a power point and its the only socket in the house

for years i just ran a 4 million metre extension cable upstairs but my speed has droped to 0.20mb and my stats

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2944 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 54.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.3 db 21.0 db

Line Attenuation is mega i assume thats the extension cable? would it be better to put the router in the kitchen and run a long cat 5 upstairs or just keep the router where it having a long phone line extension cable?

Thankd all

A properly wired telephone extension (with twisted pair cable) shouldn’t make any noticeable difference.

As a first step I’d temporarily connect the router directly to the master socket and get some line stats for comparison. This should tell you if the existing telephone extension is to blame.

it's always been advised to keep the router as close to the master socket as poss and cat5 or wireless to elsewhere. tbh I wouldn't want my rj11 cable longer than 1.2meters.

Keeping extensions as short as possible is a good idea, but the length of any reasonable extension is insignificant compared to the several kilometres of old BT copper the signal normally has to travel down.

As long as you use suitable cable, CW1308, Cat5e, etc., there shouldn’t be any impact. The problem with many telephone extensions is the cable used (untwisted), and the well documented issues with ringer wires.
