I have a netgear DG834G router, wired via ethernet cable, firefox and IE both work fine, msn won't connect, xfire, steam, ventrilo all won't connect at all, i have complete access to the router control panel, what could cause this?
I have tried restarting the router, factory defaults, i can't find any disable firewall function on the control panel, but i disabled the windows firewall and no luck.

if its set to factory defaults then it will have NAT turned on, which you want. You should check to see if plug n play or UPNP (i cant remmeber what it is off the top of my head) is turned on. This will mean the router will allow pass through on ports that your PC opens up, means you dont have to set up port forwarding for every app you want to use.

Under firewall rules or services check that you ahvent set all outbound connections to be blocked. All inbound will be blocked by default and is the correct setting, unless you want to get hacked ;P

What ISP are you with sometimes the MTU settings can effect this.
Normally you dont have to open ports for MSN but it's no unheard of.

Maybe you should request this thread is moved to the networking forum.

Try opening the specific ports on the router. Disabling its firewall is not a good test because that doesn't do the same thing.
