Is it worth buying the 6800? Would you see much advantage over say the 6700 or lower? Yes I would be overclocking it

The top of the range cpu's are always overpriced and not very good value for money.

Get a cheaper one and spend the saved cash on something else.

The Asus P5W DH Deluxe seems to be the better one for the 6600, the Gigabyte DS3 or DS4 seemed to be the choice for the 6300. Not sure of others but there are some more out there.

The extra multiplier doesn't seem to be worth it in the case of the 6700, if you have a decent board it'll be the chip that gives up first not the board. You could possibly warrant going for a 6400 over a 6300.

From what I read it's just downwards...........
Correct.

But that can come in handy if you intentially want to have higher FSB for example overclocking your memory further.

Or have I misunderstood something regarding higher FSBs vs higher Multipliers?

ok so even the 6700 is not worth it then over the cheaper ones?

The best to go for is the E6600, i did! :D And even a newbie-first-timer overclockers like me got the E6600 to 3.4ghz without even trying :o. No doubt someone with more experience could easily take it up higher :)
