Hehe, love giving duff advice :D

Core 2 Duo = Conroe.

Macs have had them for some time... and every major manufacturer has them now too.

So Core 2 Duo is Conroe, i thought they wern't, so there the exact same chip, not xut down or anything?

Cheers.

the mobile conroe/core 2 duo is the merom core, which is what you are after.

Desktop core 2 duos come in 2 forms, the allendale core (with 2MB shared L2 cache) and the conroe core (4MB shared L2 cache). The former is represented by the E6300 and E6400, the latter by the E6600 and above.

They're all great chips regardless of which ones you get.

Right so (in terms of laptops) Merom is the 4mb cache (the 6600 equivilent) and the normal core 2 duo is the 2mb versions.

Ok, got ya.

There're some excellent core duo laptop deals about, I got a 1.6GHz/512MB/60GB/15.4" widescreen fujitsu-siemens for £500, which isn't much more than you'd pay for a similar spec on turion or celeron.

Macs have had Core Duo's for a while, but they have yet to release their new range (due soon) with Core2Duos.

Other manufacturers have Core2Duos in their laptop ranges now.

So which is better?

T5500 1.66Ghz or T2500 2.00Ghz

Also is this spec ok for the price?

Toshiba: £800

# Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 Processor 1.66GHz
# 667 MHz FSB
# 2 MB Cache
# 1024 MB RAM
# 100 GB Hard Drive
# DVD ReWriter MultiDrive
# 15.4" Widescreen Display
# Microsoft Windows XP Home
# 256MB ATI X1400 Graphics

Though the current meroms aren't a huge imporvement over the yonahs, it's not until santa rosa that they'll be a big improvement.

no. merom is the mobile core 2 duo. allendale and conroe are BOTH desktop core 2 duo (same architecture, only difference being in multis and cache).
