I've just rang up and confirm'd that I will getting a conroe extreme from the first batch also :D

Will this ram be o.k. for me, G.Skill 2GB DDR2 LA PC2-5300, I will be using it in the Intel BadAxe m/b (rev 3.04)

That's what I have next to me for my E6600. :)

am really tempted by this since i have a potential buyer for my old 3800+ X2

i am looking at the following:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-126-IN)
DFI Infinity 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-020-DF)

i have a mach2 GT that i havent used yet so will be looking at using it with the above.

is this mobo ok? havent looked into intel before.

also, what memory would you recommend? want 2gb of something decent :)

as before, no idea about ddr2. been an amd puppy for aaages

maybe
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB)

Spec looks fine. As for RAM, it depends on how far you want to overclock:

You need a very good mobo to reach a stable 500MHz FSB.

thats why I'm waiting to see what the mboards turn out like...

But you don't have much to worry about as you're getting the x6800 with unlocked multipliers. You can increase your multipliers without even touching the FSB. Well, you will probably want to increase the FSB a tiny bit, but nowhere near 500MHz. Everyone else is stuck with locked multipliers and relying solely on FSB increase :(

aaaah yer... never had a chip with a unlocked multiplier :D

hmm, guess i'll see what mobos are out end of july ish i guess

or maybe i'll step up from the 6300 possibly.

any ideas of a mobo that can do more? i am hoping for 4ghz or above ideally

That works out as spending roughly £350 on RAM! Get some G.Skill for £120.

I'll be spending:

£250 for E6600
£100 for motherboard
£120 for 2GB G.Skill PC5300
£260 for X1900XT

That works out at less than your £775 estimate. :)

I just totalled up the cost for a decent Conroe setup:

E6600
2GB DDR2 capable of 400Mhz+
DFI Mobo

=£775 inc VAT

:(

Think I'll have to wait for it to become more mainstream...

I don't think it's that much...
E6600 is 252.67
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) is 156.83
And a motherboard can be had for 117.44 (Asus P5B)

Total of £526.87. By mid Sept the E6600 will be under £200 and the boards will be under £100.

I assumed I would need the stuff that does 400Mhz+ since I'm on water and not scared of volts? 9 x 444Mhz = 4Ghz. That's PC8000 right? I guess the 6400 might do 440Mhz?

On 939 systems, running memory dividers didn't have much impact on performance. Can the same be said for conroe systems?

Also, how high do you reckon the average 965 motherboard's FSB will overclock to (eg. Asus P5B). I'm planning on getting an E6600 and some pc2-6400 ram (don't want to spend £300 on pc2-800 ram!).

Also, if I buy some pc2-6400 ram, will i be able to overclock the ram past its rated speed (ie. whatever 6400 is in FSB terms) because i don't want my ram limiting the conroe's overclock.

Cheers!

mwuahahha changed my mind and bought one ...pity there are not many mobos for it atm...there are some but wonder if there will be more available on release date

pc2-6400 is 800MHz FSB

Personally I'm waiting out for the E4200 then perhaps upgrading early '07 :)

Think the 4200 would be good seeing that it has 800FSB and a multi of 8 :)

do you think it would be possible to get a overclock out of it that comapres to one of the higher FSB core2s?
