You can overclock on stock vcore though and it can also be hardwired for more voltage. Iam still considering it as last resort

Yes, but how high can the FSB go?
AFAIK, that mobo doesn't OC as well as say the DFI, Intel or Asus.

I wonder how long this thread will be by the time they are actually released --- what three weeks time or something????

These cpu's may well be very promising but come on guys (and gals) isnt this shooting your bolt a little early????

Not really. Stock will be entering the channels in little over a week...

I never spend over a 100 on mobos for that exact reason.
Good idea but my mobo is still a high end model which supports native Xfire, DDR2-800 for a 1.6Ghz FSB & you can select any vcore or Dimm voltage.

Methinks Intel & the mobo makers are being very greedy here and even though VRM1.1 LGA775 mobos are not officially supported good chance they will still work albeit without the Intel techs which lower the vcore to reduce temps. Should not be a problem as Conroe is cooler anyway. No-one knows until Conroe is on the street so I'm gonna wait & see before taking a big hit on this mobo.

The review sites are going to have to get a move on - their copy deadline just jumped forward by a week. How many pages (read adverts) do you think Toms Hardware Guide will be able to spread this one over... I think it could be 60+.

Ok, I was going for the AMD64 X2 4400 but your posts and banter are making me think its time to try Intel if there is a big performance difference to be had.

If I went for the Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN) which of this G.Skill memory that you guys are chatting about should I choose:

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 LA PC2-5300 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit

or

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit

and which motherboard suitable for an Nvidia 7900GTX? The only overclocking I would do is via the motherboard and stock cooling. Is this good ram? I've always bought Crucial.

Many thanks!

I would go for the NR kit as it allows you to overclock the E6600 higher than the LA kit and the price difference is not too bad.

G.Skill is a very good brand and well known. As for motherboards, a lot of people seem to have personal favourites. The popular ones seem to be the Intel Bad Axe, the Asus P5W DH and DFI Infinity 975X. All of them are based on the 975X chipset and quite costly. There are some cheaper boards that support Conroe, based on the new 965 chipset.

Look here for differences between the two chipsets.
