just playing with ideas at the moment, i got the rest of the kit so if i where to go conroe (for now, all ill would need is cpu, mobo + ram (and cooler if oem cpu))

cheapest i can find is something like this

CP-126-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-126-IN)
£114.99 £114.99
MY-083-CS Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) (MY-083-CS)
£77.99 £77.99
MB-003-AK Asrock ConroeXFire-eSATA2 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-003-AK)
£53.99 £53.99
Subtotal £246.97
VAT £43.22
Total £290.19

is there any cheaper PC5300 ?
Could i get a cheap motherboard?

i figure thats probably about as cheap as im gonna get unless i get an uteraly **** motherboard, but anyway just on the off chance there is a nicer board cheaper or any cheaper ram...

i think thats a great bit of research you done there....i doubt you get cheaper...

"i bet someone proves me wrong" hahaha

You could get a AsRock 775-VSTA from elsewhere and use your old memory if it's compatible with the board then upgrade the memory later.

The oem 6300 is going for £98 excl leaving £16 excl towards aftermarket cooler.

For £10 more it go for Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x512MB)

I went for the asrock 775 DUAL-VSTA and it works fine with my DDR RAM and IDE drives and the E6300. Great board. Maybe a bit quirky but once you get it up and running it will be fine. Not the best for overclocking as it can only get up to a 300 stable FSB but that will get you 2.1Ghz from your E6300.

Very cheap at around £50 off the net. With your cpu for £100 then that's just a £150 upgrade to get conroe :D

unfortunately i had to go else where, to find what i want, as much as id love to stay loyal to ocuk, in this case another retailer has

Asrock 775 Dual VSTA
Conroe E6300 Retail

both instock, inv vat + pnp for £170 for the pair

So in answer to my original question, yes i can conroe for a lot cheaper than £290! lol

Jesus Christ, that's hardly anything. Definitely on my "to do" list on account I'm currently running a 1.8gh sempron :s lol

Cheers guys

Alec I've just done the same for a friend. Sounds like the same place.

Can't believe myself you can upgrade so cheaply these days!

after some "hmming" Ive decided i quite fancy going the DDR2 route and what not - quite fancy getting some hands first with overclocking these lil conroe beauties - now AsRock (of course) advertise this motherboard ion the above as being a good overclocker, rekon this is true? bearing in mind i would only be aiming (this is a shot in the dark so bear with me) for the 2.5ghz range ? however far 667mhz stuff is gonna get me :)

any other suggestions for boards? i see the DS3 and what not but i'm still wanting to "conroe on the cheap" so i regard those nice gigabyte boards out of my price range tbh

any advice much welcomed

so far im upto

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz
Scythe Infinity Heatpipe CPU Cooler
OCZ 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC5400 Dual Channel Gold
Asrock ConroeXFire-eSATA2

@

£301.93 after vat

just using the scythe infinity cooler as a 'place holder' on my shopping cart while the ninja is out of stock

Just built 2 machines identical to that and they are absolutely spot on, running really well. Highly recommended spec :)
