My current rig is a p4 2.8 @ 3.5, 1 gig of ocz PC4200, Sapphire 9800XT. The graphics card has blown up, I get multi coloured blocks over the screen perminantly, so its time to upgrade.

The problem is do I wait for the Kentsfield?

I can wait to upgrade for a bit. However I don't want to wait and find out the Kentsfield starts at £800. I know a few people on here think it will start at a high price, but did people think that about the Conroe? I mean 2 Conroe 6300 would only cost £220

I know a lot of people will be interested in your views. Lots of us are thinking the same questions.

Agreed a nicely clocked conroe will see you right for a good while.

Kentsfield will be pricey a 6300 clocked to 3.2ghz is a lot or cpu power for £120

I expect the Kentsfield core will initially be used for Xeons and Extreme Core 2's.

A Quad core will be used for extreme core DUO? I cant see that happening unless two of the cores are unusable

Double the price of the equiv Core 2 + 10% and you will have your price.

I dont know the range but I know there is The Core 2 Quad? E6600/E6700 I think.

Just get Conroe..

Kentsfields are ment to be extreme editions, i reckon the 6600 XE variant will start at £600 and the 6700 XE to be around £800.

I cannot see Intel selling Quad cores that cheaply - otherwise their recent Xtreme Core Duo is going have be a lot cheaper (and its only been out 4 weeks or so)

If you read this thread here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17615807&page=2&pp=30

I mentioned a link it said the Kentsfield will start @ $999
Which roughly converted is like £500-600 UK pounds but like others said since its UK that will mean it will cost £700-800.

I dont think its worth buying kentsfield anymore, not at those prices definatly... best to grab a E6600 (if u can) and then wait till QuadCore arrives properly on the PC remember AMDs quad core "Duo2 Killer" should be out Summer 07.

The E6600 would be enough to last a long time yet !

Why buy a 4 core cpu when so little uses 2?

You are going to be paying a premium for something you dont use/much.

Wait for quad core to be done properly, imo, k8l will be the first true quad core cpu and intel should have a native quad core design as well.
Untill then conroe is fast enough and has 2 cores.

The X6800 from OCUK is £666 ( and £780 inc VAT) ( I am not knocking OCUK price at all) and I cant see that price coming down much at all - after all why do Intel need to with little competition from AMD currently

And even if they do reduce the price, the four core chip is not a direct replacement anyway and with developement costs to think about I cant see Kentsfield coming over under £999 - Intel arent exactly in the business of giving away their latest cpu's after all

some of us do use software that uses multicore CPUs properly. especially when using open source software - they are much quicker to add better SMP support.

if i had quad core i would get a huge speed increase (in my case i do a lot of video editing/compression etc). if you're a gamer then of course you wont get that much of a boost at the mo.

it entirely depends on the user, so the blanket term :

You are going to be paying a premium for something you dont use/much.

doesnt apply to everyone

Of course if they were to release a killer 3d game that was really good Quadcore would take off, I hear Q4 got a massive boost like 30-40fps extra with the second core, imagine it with another 2 cores...And imagine if it was a really popular/major title also.

Not that u would require that sorta insane speed ;) quite possible even next gen cards will be 2x faster then there last card.

Core2 clocked will see you threw. I dont no what way Intel are gonna do it but with Kentsfield its 2 dual0core superguled beside each other like they did with there 1st dual core chip.

I was gonna hold out for Kentsfield for just got a E6300 core2 untill the revised quadcore

Kentsfield is two Conroe cores glued together. Not particularly elegant but it will still perform like nothing else before and certainly won't be a failure like Smithfield was.

I completely agree it WILL be a success, but not on the typical desktop.

On workstation machines and servers it will fly off Intel's stock shelves, but Core 2 Duo is going to keep 99% of standard users (and even at a guess a good 80% of people on these kinds of forums) happy for a while to come -imo anyway

the desktop user isnt worride what way the ships r made, they only care if the computer works.

the quad core doesnt really bother the every day user, Its us, the oc;s who r bothered.

As far as i am,i will wait untill quad core is a new disgen as such. And by that i mean 4 cores working 2gether in perfection instead of 2 dual cores clued 2gether
