But in real terms 9 seconds for new tech is not that outstanding IMO.

9 seconds on what ? is that 9 seconds on a job that will take 1min then yes its a great improvement imo, if however its 9 seconds on a 1 hour job then its not,

just throwing '9 seconds isnt much' around does not help me come to a conclusion.

read the thread again and watch the video!

9 seconds on reading the thread comments on the previous page :p

it was 75 vs 66 secs

When you times those values by real time values instead of small files on encoding say; a full divx movie the results start to become massive.

for example:

75 seconds becomes 7500 seconds
66 seconds becomes 6600 seconds

that's a massive 15 minute difference... etc quite big i'd say.

Whilst I understand where you're coming from, I'm not too sure if it would work out as simple as that. I do agree that over the course of minutes/hours encoding, the gap would start to slip away from AMD. Well done to Intel if Conroe lives up to it's potential.

Not sure why poeple with an opty 170 @ 2.8ghz etc would even consider getting a conroe apart from the "playing with new tech" bug. Your cpu's are fine, don't worry, they just wont be at the very top anymore :p

But this is all very good news for peeps like me with an A64 3200+ @ stock speeds or even an older 2500 xp-m etc. Potentialy it's a great chip for the money.

Having had a Intel P4 3.4ghz before I got my opty I have some spare ballistix DDR2 lying around.

It would be a shame not to get a mobo and conroe for a bit of fun and compare both rigs against each other. For relatively little outlay.

What will a E6600 and a new mobo cost me?
Not that much.

I can then actually see with my own eyes how much faster in real terms the conroe will be be,how it overclcocks etc... and run some real world tests. :D

Fair enough, just seems like you have a lot of posts in this thread saying that it won't be worth, not much faster etc.

I tip my hat to Intel, it’s a great step forward which has made me consider future upgrades using their CPU’s. I have an FX57 at present and have thought about an upgrade round winter so I’ll be observing those with the Conroe and the response of AMD.

It’s too early in the day to hear AMD doom talk, please…..

I havent used Intel since the days of 486's so they must have done something different recently.
Is this Conroe going to be dual core or is that another version in the pipeline

Imagine what the 3dmark06 score is

hrm google says -

So far; the best 3dMark scores are:

01 - 69402 - (Conroe E6700 @ 3.87GHz, X-fired X1900's)
03 - 44010 (FX60 @ 3.3GHz, SLi 7900GTX's)
05 - 22466 (Conroe E6700 @ 3.87GHz, X-fired X1900's)
06 - 12768 (Conroe E6700 @ 3.8 GHz, X-fired X1900's)

taken from xtreme systems.

Yea its only 6 times faster then my rig, pah
I wonder if they powerfull enough to benefit from a physx card, theres a real test :p

I would actually change that around to:
Would a Conroe + x1900xt benefit from a Physx Card?

Thats nothing I get over 12k!

So i don't know what all the fuss is about. ;)

Oops I forgot I get over 12k in 05 not o6 lol :D :o
