Conroe out July 23rd!!!

im unsure whether to get myself a cheap amd x2 chip of the mm when conroe comes out and wait until i have enough dollar for the core 2 extreme cpu... plus then all of the bugs might have been ironed out etc.

Your posts in this thread just give me the jist that you're trying to justify your recent spend on the high end rig you've just bought.

Conroe will wipe the floor with any current offerings by either themselfs or AMD, if you've not already got a computer, or if perhaps you've got one that you're not entirely happy with performance wise.. Conroe is the way to go.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with your current rig, far from it - just Intel will bring high end performance to the mainstream market.

No I have had my rig ages got the 170 when they first came out.
In PC terms my technology is old but unlike most upgrades I do this one has lasted me the longest.

And will last me for some time yet.
I'm in a good position at the moment.

I don't see the need to upgrade as conroe will be a nudge faster and nothing I will see in real terms over my current setup.

Conroe is hyped to the max IMO my current rig struggles with nothing I DO so unless someone is with a slow single core chip the upgrade is not worth it on release.

Just like AM2 its all new tech but with few benefits for the outlay right now.

much faster mp3 encoding and video encoding is not significant!?!

A few seconds off an mp3 encoding time is not going to get me excited.
I mean how long does it take? seconds already on my rig. :D

My video encoding power is not slow either so unless I could get stuff done in half the time conroe can wait.

its gonna cost bare forget that!

I take it it's slang for "it's gonna cost a lot"?
From what I'm seeing, the E6600 sounds value for money...
it's the DDR2 that's gonna be a bum - tho the Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) sounds good, for £212 - it's EPP tech works with nForce590 Mobo - great for Newbie overclockers :D

So your gonna stick with your rig until the new amd chips at the middle or end of 2007?

Even then the performance is supposed to bring it up to conroes.....

I could say the same about my Barton to my Opteron. Nevertheless, the later is significantly faster than the former. 20% across the board is certainly no small feat. The Athlon was highly praised on release, yet the margin compared to Intel's offering was also within 20%. It is very easy to say, "oh but it is just a few seconds", but unless you upgraded to your Opteron from a old Athlon/P3, all you got from your Opteron was a few seconds.

Sorry for being a Conroe noob and being too lazy to trudge the forum.

Whats so good about Conroe? Are they good gaming CPU's?

Anyone got any good links? Price guides etc?

Cheers.

I upgraded from a p4 3.4ghz to my dual opty and my beloved 170 trounces it in everything it does.

my 170 is best chip I have ever owned. :D

I'm not looking to upgrade for a while.
New GFX card maybe thats about it. :)

No need to upgrade to conroe, my rig is uber fast now, so like I have said ,if conroe doesn't makes things happen on my pc 50% faster at least in real terms I will be staying at FX 62 speeds for some time yet.

encoding an mp3 5 seconds faster is not enough of a turn on for me to switch. :p

Well put it like this, a Conroe at 2.66GHz (stock) which will cost about £400, beats an FX60 (2.6GHz) overclocked to 2.8GHz in every single test possible. The FX60 also costs £700.

That's whats good, it has high priced power at low prices. Like Dr Jones said, the E6600 (2.4GHz) should cost about £250 and virtually beat a stock FX60 for more than half the price! :D

its more than a few seconds....its quite a significant speed up over a FX62! Imagine it overclocked...

OK I give in I'll get one lol :p

Just out of interest how much will the E6600 in pounds be? and what mobo to get.

Will DFI make one?

And can a conroe mobo take SLI?

rough idea?
got a link to those mobo's?

Well if you look at the pricing guide picture on the previous page to this one, the Intel Pentium 4 950 Dual Core is priced at $316 - the same price the conroe will be launched at.

Overclockers sell the 950 for £229 - so I guess conroe will be around the same price.....maybe. :p

That's probably as close as we can get to a UK price at this point. It's always tricky due to dollar conversions.

As for DFI boards, no definite specs at the moment but they have boards scheduled.

If Conroa will be so much faster and wipe the floor with AMD as many people say then this will be great, to have a much faster CPU.

I have reservations about the technology (AMD have ruled games for so long), price (how much will a good system cost ie. clockable) and optimisation (multi-threading is still in its infancy)
