im unsure whether to get myself a cheap amd x2 chip of the mm when conroe comes out and wait until i have enough dollar for the core 2 extreme cpu... plus then all of the bugs might have been ironed out etc.

Conroe will wipe the floor with any current offerings by either themselfs or AMD, if you've not already got a computer, or if perhaps you've got one that you're not entirely happy with performance wise.. Conroe is the way to go.
That's not to say there's anything wrong with your current rig, far from it - just Intel will bring high end performance to the mainstream market.
rafster said:much faster mp3 encoding and video encoding is not significant!?!

I mean how long does it take? seconds already on my rig.
My video encoding power is not slow either so unless I could get stuff done in half the time conroe can wait.
I could say the same about my Barton to my Opteron. Nevertheless, the later is significantly faster than the former. 20% across the board is certainly no small feat. The Athlon was highly praised on release, yet the margin compared to Intel's offering was also within 20%. It is very easy to say, "oh but it is just a few seconds", but unless you upgraded to your Opteron from a old Athlon/P3, all you got from your Opteron was a few seconds.easyrider said:A few seconds off an mp3 encoding time is not going to get me excited.

speeduk said:So your gonna stick with your rig until the new amd chips at the middle or end of 2007?
Even then the performance is supposed to bring it up to conroes.....

rafster said:its more than a few seconds....its quite a significant speed up over a FX62! Imagine it overclocked...

Always hard to guess on a UK price, I don't think I could say.
easyrider said:rough idea?
got a link to those mobo's?
killer_uk said:Well if you look at the pricing guide picture on the preview page to this one, the Intel Pentium 4 950 Dual Core is priced at $316 - the same price the conroe will be launched at.
Overclockers sell the 950 for £229 - so I guess conroe will be around the same price.....maybe.
