Conroe Temps: use thermal pads?

I think I may have one of the Conroe's that has a slightly curved IHS as my temperatures aren't that brilliant; mid 40's idle, up to 70's when I perform the TAT test.

I read that applying a generous amount of AS5 would help, and it did knock a couple of degrees of of my temps, but I wandered whether using an Akasa ShinEtsu Thermal Interface Pad would improve matters as this would help to counteract the effects of the convex IHS and fill out any gaps, if you follow my logic.

Or am I probably barking up the wrong tree? :o :o

Rig as per sig, using a stock Intel HSF and using TAT to arrive at my temps.

I got a good temp drop from lapping my E6600

Thanks for the input guys, it's appreciated :)

Don't know whether I'm willing to lap my cpu as it'd invalidate the warranty; your braver than I am :)

I know Arctic Freezers at one time hadn't used to give the temp drops that people expected, but I've been told that Arctic are now applying more thermal paste to them to combat the curved IHS problem, so I may just get one of those and see how I go from there. Or for the sake of a couple of quid I may test out my theory and see if the pads work.

furnace, I've read that they aren't that hard to remove.

Thanks again, dagwoood.
