if you could swap a 8800GTS 640 + £50 for a G92 GTS 512 would you consider it a good deal

my 8800GTS can only clock to 610/1500/1800
with the G92s increased shaders/clock speed am i likely to see a significant improvement to warrant the extra £50

im disappointed with the price/performance of the 280/260 and will not upgrade until the next refresh

Depends on what you do with it, the newer 512MB is on a 256bit bus and the older one is on a 320bit bus or something like that, and the fact its a Tad less Memory.

That's more or less what i did :)
Got a quite nice performance boost going to the 512MB version and my dad paid the rest of the money for the upgrade after selling the 640MB :D

You might just hang on to see how well the 4870 does though.

Like yourself i was about to purchase an 8800GT/S 512MB but with what ATI are about to release in the 4850 it looks to be same kind of price for better performance especially with AA enabled.

I would just wait.

The new ATI cards look to be a promising buy, and a smart-sell of your card on ebay could see you getting the better upgrade for under £50 net.

hmm im not an NV fanboy in anyway :o but tbh i never considered getting an ATI card

i just cant stand the control panel

last ATI card i had was 9800XT and just before i sold it they changed the control panel to a horrible bloated catalyst control center that took ages to load as was ugly as hell

are ATI still using that type of control panel

even if you dont like the control panel, youd only really need to access it once when you install it, unless your the type that needs to change settings before every game :p

its not just that what about creating profiles etc

it was around 4-5 years since i last used an ATI card has the control panel changed or improved in anyway since then

thats probably the last main problem ati need to address with their drivers, having custom game profiles like nvidia cards do. ati's method is very poor compared to the simplicity of nvidia's method. and with games comming out these days not having any AA or AF settings in them the profile system becomes more important.

I went from a 640GTS to a 512mb GTS (albeit with about 3 months gap of no pc), but its a decent boost in performance, gaming at 1680x1050 with a qcore 6600 @ 3ghz, everything runs perfectly well and very smoothly.

While im eyeing up the new radeons, i doubt i really have any reason to upgrade this time around.

With the news of the 55-nm 9800GTX+ i would probably get that actually, should end up being quite cheap, with a lower power draw + high clocks and a chance of some great overclocking action. Definitely wait for a few weeks to see anyway, everything will be much clearer then.

Definitely wait now with the news of the 9800GTX+. It says the old 9800GTX will drop in price to $199 - the same as a 4850 so around £130.

That means the current GTS G92 will have to drop to around £100 I guess and the GT relegated to the sub £80 range.

Not the time to be buying a GTS G92 IMO.
