Considering a Megane R26R

Just general road use to be honest, think its about time I splash some money on a fun car for myself. Seems to be bang on budget for performance / price.

I'm just after a very nippy fun road car that will put a smile on my face with excellent handling. I'm coming from a mk4 golf gti 1.8t.

Thinks to look out for?
Rough running costs?

From what limited knowledge I have of them, they are quite highly rated! Handle well and have a good amount of poke! From memory the tyre costs are quite high (compared to cars of similar performance) due to the sizing.

For examples around that age and mileage have a check of pads and discs and the clutch - they can go around 30k, seems to be a bit of a lottery depending on how it's been looked after! Yes that's applicable to any car, but it used to be quite prominent on these I believe. Also try and see if it pulls to the left a lot. Lots of reports of them doing this but I don't think there was ever an official response to it from Renault, could just be the geo setup from the factory.

R26 or R26.R?

There's a difference. And it's a corker of a difference. ;)

R26.R went on a big diet, over 120kg lost, which includes losing the rear seats, lots of sound deadening, some glasswork changed for perspex and along the way it gained a cage, 6 point harnesses, carbon buckets, uprated springs and dampers. Many also had the semi-slick Toyo tyres and the lightweight titanium exhaust. Oh, and there was only about 400 of them and seem to be still around £20k

The R26 is a great fun car though. The R26.R is a bit of a nutter. ;)

They are also circa £20k for one 5 years old

If I was in the market for another hot hatch, R26 would be at the top of my list.

Used to have an R26, great car, handled well. Brakes and tyres weren't cheap depending on brand. Check the electric windows work, my driver side stopped working, it's a common fault that's well documented.

Should that be concern of anytype of importing or kind or travel history I should worry about?

I don't think its anything to worry about just seems a bit odd I always like to know the history behind the cars I buy so i would ask why, might be a interesting story behind it or maybe not!

It's the R26R you need, that's the proper one. Ugly to look at mind, but they are fantastic fun. I provide this example to show that. Lad in the passenger seat owns it, lad in the drivers seat is 'handy'.

Tired tyres and skill, what track days are about :D

Read title, clicked link, saw price, thought  they've dropped in value, then realised it isn't an 'R' model. Sanity restored.

If you look at the pics some of them have the French style plate on the front as well whilst some have a normal plate, most likely that they're just not all current photos

I considered the Megane 225 as I seen them going for 4k but a quick Google round owners sites etc provides a reason why they are cheap compared to Focus St's, Mazda Mps's etc. seen lots of complaints about most Megane's having silly electrical faults that u wouldn't normally see in other cars of its class. Stupidly high costs for certain jobs aswell.
