Hey all,

Recently I've been having problems with seriously laggy programs (sometimes to the point of crashing), slow program running and poor boot-up times. Admittedly, while I am using a greater number of more demanding programs, I probably could help the situation by giving my PC a bit of a clear out, perhaps even a complete re-format *gasps*.

Whatever the case though, I'm pretty sure my PC's spec is lacking in the memory department. We're looking at:

Opteron 165 Dual Core @ 2250mhz
2*512mb Patriot PC3200 2-3-2-5
Radeon X800 XT PE 256mb

Now what I'd ask of you is - how do you think I should go about this? I'm pretty strapped for cash at the mo, so would I be able to get another 2*512 kit of the same timings and keep the overclock the same, or will I encounter speed problems there?

And if not, how pricey are 2*1gb kits to completely replace my current ram? I'd imagine PC3200 is getting pretty old these days, so I might be able to grab a bargain?

oh and also, anyone know of any particularly good 'pc-cleaing' apps out there, or is it just using uninstalling programs?

any help greatly appreciated :)

thanks,
peter

CCleaner will clean out the crap.

As for the memory, PC3200 is quite expensive atm compared to DDR2 as it's only being made in small quantities. But you can pick up a basic 2gb kit for £60-70 online.

Format and clean install once every 6 months is a must really :)
Cleaning programs can only do so much to tidy things up.

2gig kits go on the mm for around £50 nowadays and thats for decent performace stuff.

or buy here...limited selection :(

Also you always try upping the overclock on the opty if tempretures and motherboard allow. You dont say what motherboard you have but most opterons are capable of much more with a good cooler....324x9 (2920Mhz) on mine just now with a lanparty ultra d

I've got an Asus A8V Deluxe.

I believe it suffers from instability around ~255mhz FSB :(

Thanks for the help everyone! :D
